Everything You Need to Know About Yosemite Engagement Photos

Yosemite is the perfect place for engagement photos. There are towering granite cliffs, waterfalls, beautiful meadows, giant sequoias, and some of the most beautiful views in California, all in one place! Engagement photos aren’t just for documenting this time in your lives, they’re also a chance to celebrate, spend some time together, and plan an adventure that reflects your relationship. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to plan your Yosemite engagement photos!

When to Take Yosemite Engagement Photos

Yosemite looks completely different depending on the season, so when you plan your engagement session really makes a difference.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Yosemite and easiest time to access the entire park. All the roads are typically open during the warmer months, though exact opening dates depend on snow conditions. The trails and higher elevation areas will be clear, but it’ll also be more busy. One thing to keep in mind as well is that late summer and early fall is fire season, so smoke can be an unfortunate reality this time of year.

Fall is one of my favorite times for Yosemite engagement photos, because the weather starts to cool down, summer crowds start to disappear, and you can get that beautiful golden light without quite as many people around.

Winter is a completely different experience. The park gets covered in snow, waterfalls freeze, and the landscape looks really unique. It can be harder to navigate, since some roads and trails will be closed, but if you layer up and plan ahead, engagement photos in a winter wonderland can look pretty magical.

If waterfalls are your jam, spring is a great season! Snowmelt makes the waterfalls extra dramatic, and wildflowers start to bloom. Higher elevations will still be snowy, though, but it’s a good time to explore the valley!

No matter when you go, I always recommend planning your Yosemite engagement photos for a weekday to avoid crowds. Sunrise or sunset is also ideal for soft light and a little more privacy.

The Best Places for Yosemite Engagement Photos

Yosemite has so many incredible places for engagement photos, and I also recommend going to a few different locations! Here are a few options.

Glacier Point

Glacier Point is one of the most iconic, dramatic views in the park! It’s an incredible place for Yosemite engagement photos, with panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and Half Dome from above.

Tunnel View

Tunnel View is close to the entrance of the park, and it’s a great place to start an engagement session – you don’t have to hike to get an incredible view! The view opens up to Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls all visible from the overlook.

Cook’s Meadow

This short, mile-long trail gives you views of some of the highlights of the park – Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Glacier Poin, and Sentinel Rock! It’s a great spot for easy access to beautiful views.

Mariposa Grove

This is the largest grove of sequoias in Yosemite, so if you love that forest vibe, this is another beautiful option. It feels pretty different from the valley, with huge trees that tower over you.

Tolumne Meadows

Tuloumne Meadows is one of the biggest high-elevation meadows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It has some unique views, with wide-open landscapes, wildflowers, and a different feeling from Yosemite Valley. A river winds through it, and the mountains in the background offer a view that’s quite different from the granite formations seen in most of the park.

Yosemite Valley

The valley is full of places to explore, and it’s a great option if you want a variety of scenery. You can wander through the trees, find views of Half Dome or El Capitan, walk along the Merced River, and stop at different viewpoints along the way!

Yosemite Engagement Photo Permits

Good news, you don’t need a permit to take engagement photos at Yosemite! Of course, you have to be in areas that are open to the public, and be respectful of the environment and other park visitors.

But, you will need to pay the entrance fee to get into the park. The fee is $35 per car, but if you visit national parks often, you can get an America the Beautiful Pass, which gets you into any national park in the country for $80! You can buy your pass online ahead of time, or as you enter the park.

What to Wear for Yosemite Engagement Photos

My biggest piece of advice when it comes to what to wear for Yosemite engagement photos is to choose something that feels like you. While it can be fun to dress up, make sure it still feels natural to you. This will really shine through in your photos when you feel comfortable and like yourself.

As for some general guidelines, earthy colors and neutral tones work best. Outfits that have some movement, like loose flowy skirts, can add some fun to your photos too! Comfortable shoes are a must! Feel free to bring a nicer pair of shoes to change into, but be prepared for walking on rocky trails.

Yosemite’s temperature can vary even as you move through the park, so layers are your friend. Higher elevation locations can be significantly cooler!

I also recommend outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Make sure you try your outfits on and see how they look together beforehand. You can also bring two outfits! A lot of couples like to do a more casual outfit first, then change into a fancier one!

Finding the Right Yosemite Engagement Photographer

Your photographer is going to have a pretty big impact on your experience, not just your photos! Yosemite is huge, and knowing where to go, when to go, and how long it takes to get between locations can make the difference between a relaxed session and one where you’re constantly watching the clock.

It’s super important to find someone who can make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. Because if you feel stiff and awkward… your photos will feel stiff and awkward. My approach is more relaxed and I give direction when you need it, but I’m more interested in letting you interact naturally and experience the place together. Look at it more like directing and guiding rather than posing! It shouldn’t feel like a formal photoshoot!
