Tips for Getting the Best Lake Tahoe Wedding Photos
It’s no secret that Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places to get married. Between the crystal-clear water, towering pine trees, granite boulders, and mountain views in every direction, you really can’t go wrong! But just because the scenery is incredible, doesn’t mean your photos automatically happen on their own. A little planning goes a long way toward making sure your wedding gallery captures not only the beauty of Tahoe, but also the feeling of your day. As a Lake Tahoe wedding photographer (who also got married here!), I’ve spent a lot of time exploring the area, finding the best light, the quietest locations, and the little details that make wedding photos feel natural. Here are some of my favorite tips for getting the best Lake Tahoe wedding photos.
Lake Tahoe Wedding Photo Timeline
One of the biggest factors that affects your photos isn’t the location or the weather, but the light! The middle of the day usually brings overhead sun, which creates harsh shadows and makes everyone squint. Instead, I always recommend planning portraits closer to sunrise or sunset whenever possible. During these times, the light is softer, warmer, and much more flattering.
Eloping gives you more flexibility with your timeline, so we can build the entire day around the best light, whether that means watching the sun come up over the lake or ending the evening with alpenglow on the mountains.
Finding a Location for Lake Tahoe Wedding Photos
Lake Tahoe has a ton of variety, so you have a lot of options for your wedding photos. If you love the dramatic granite boulders meeting bright blue water, Sand Harbor might be exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re imagining towering pine trees and a quieter atmosphere, the west shore has plenty of beautiful forests, while Hope Valley offers mountain meadows and aspens.
Go to Multiple Locations!
It can be a good idea to go to multiple locations! That way, you get some variety in your Lake Tahoe wedding photos, and you get to experience different parts of the area. This can also be a great way to get some time to yourselves and maybe you have the ceremony with family, then take off to explore, just the two of you.
Find Somewhere Private
When couples are looking for the perfect spot to tie the knot, my first question is never, “What’s the most popular location?” Instead, I want to know what kind of experience you want to have, and recommend locations that fit your vision. Most couples don’t want a huge audience of strangers, so finding those off the beaten path spots is key. We can definitely go to some of the iconic locations for photos, but it’s also important to be able to take some photos without an audience!
Plan Enough Time for Lake Tahoe Wedding Photos
The best wedding photos aren’t usually created by rushing from one location to another. They’re created when you have time to slow down, walk together, enjoy the scenery, and simply enjoy being married. I always build in extra time to my timelines so that we’re not stressing or racing the clock. It gives you flexibility to discover an unexpected viewpoint or stop for snacks.
The goal isn’t to spend hours posing. It’s to give yourself enough time that your photos feel relaxed instead of hurried, and so that you have time to relax and explore while the camera happens to come with us.
Prepare for Lake Tahoe Weather
Mountain weather can change quickly, and that’s part of what makes Lake Tahoe so beautiful. Clouds rolling over the mountains, fresh snowfall, a little wind across the lake, or even a passing summer storm can add so much atmosphere to your Lake Tahoe wedding photos.
I encourage couples to embrace whatever Tahoe gives us, and part of this means being prepared so that you stay comfortable! If you’re freezing and uncomfortable the whole time, your photos will likely show it. So make sure you have layers, comfortable shoes, and that you’ll be able to stay warm. Wedding photos aren’t just about how you look, they’re about how you feel too!
Have a Plan B (and C) for Lake Tahoe Wedding Photos
Things don’t always go according to plan, and weather, construction, or other surprises can lead to roads closing, trails being inaccessible, and more. So, you want to make sure that you’re prepared with backup options! As a photographer who specializes in working outdoors, this is part of the package. I always have backup locations ready so that you don’t have to stress!
Enjoy Lake Tahoe’s Scenery
One of the biggest advantages of getting married in Lake Tahoe is that your wedding day can feel like an adventure instead of an event. The day isn’t just about a ceremony. You should consider building in some time to experience this place you’ve chosen. Have a picnic by the lake, rent kayaks, take a hike, watch the sunset… the options for adventure are endless! Your photos will tell the whole story, and it should feel like an experience, rather than like a photoshoot.

You don’t need to know how to pose to get beautiful wedding photos. In fact, most people tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera – so if you’re nervous, that’s totally normal!
