Everything You Need to Know About Eloping in Hope Valley
If you want mountains, meadows, and water all in one frame, a Hope Valley elopement might be perfect for you. Just south of Lake Tahoe, this high alpine valley is one of the best places to elope in California. The Carson River winds through an open meadow, surrounded by peaks and aspen trees – it’s quieter than Yosemite, and gives you easy access to beautiful nature! If you’re dreaming of a mountain elopement that’s intimate and scenic, here’s everything you need to know about planning a Hope Valley elopement.
The Best Time for a Hope Valley Elopement
Hope Valley is stunning in every season, but fall is hands down my favorite time for an elopement here. Starting in late September, the aspens turn to shades of gold and orange, popping against the evergreens. It’s one of the most amazing fall foliage spots in Northern California, and it’s less crowded than the summer time.
Winter turns Hope Valley into a winter wonderland. It’s possible to get here, since it’s not too far off the highway, but you’ll need a vehicle that can handle the snowy mountain roads. It’ll be a lot quieter than other times of year! Make sure the check that your location is accessible in the winter though. Some places are closed off for the Winter season.
Snow can linger into May, so there isn’t much “spring” in this area. It gets really muddy as the snow melts, and weather can be pretty unpredictable.
Summer brings warm days, green meadows, and wildflowers. It’s the busiest season, so plan for more traffic and more people. But, it’s usually the best time for hiking and outdoor adventures!
Getting There
Hope Valley is along Highway 88, connecting the Central Valley to Carson Pass and the Lake Tahoe Basin. If you’re flying in, the closest airport is the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. From there, it’s a little over an hour’s drive to Hope Valley. If you would like a bigger airport with more flight options, you can fly into Sacramento International Airport. This airport has more flight options, but is a bit further. It will take you 2-3 hours to get to your destination.
A car is definitely the best way to get to Hope Valley, so if you’re flying, I definitely recommend renting one for the last bit of the trip. Cell service can be spotty to nonexistent, so download offline maps before you go! And just like any mountain pass, give yourself extra time for the drive to account for wildlife, slow moving RVs, or for pulling over to enjoy the view.
Do You Need a Permit for a Hope Valley Elopement?
Hope Valley is on National Forest Land. Most likely, you do not need a permit for your Hope Valley elopement! However, rules can change, and they can depend on exact location, the size of your elopement, and more. So, it’s always best to reach out to the Ranger District, whose contact information can be found here.
As an elopement photographer, part of my job is helping you navigate this! So don’t worry if the logistics seem confusin, I’ll make sure you have all the information you need.
How to Get a Marriage License
One thing to keep in mind when you get married anywhere near Lake Tahoe is that the lake is in both California and Nevada. So you need to make sure you get your marriage license in the state where your ceremony will take place! Hope Valley is in California, and the closest place to get a marriage license is the El Dorado County office in South Lake Tahoe. You’ll need to schedule an appointment online – no walk-ins!
If you live in California, it’s usually easiest to get a marriage license from whichever office is closest to where you live. If you’re traveling from out of state, give yourself some extra time to get the marriage license. There’s no waiting period, but it expires after 90 days.
You’ll also need an officiant to sign. I highly recommend inquiring with Megs Gurley or Cindie Wilding, two of the most talented officiants in the area!
Elopement Tips
Here are some tips to help you plan your Hope Valley elopement!
- Plan for sunrise or sunset ceremony – Hope Valley’s open meadow means the light is best at sunrise and sunset. Midday lighting can be harsh, especially for wide open spaces without shade. Planning your ceremony closer to sunrise or sunset means gorgeous lighting, and fewer people around!
- Plan an adventure – there’s so much to do in this area! You can hike the trails, soak in the nearby Grover Hot Springs, plan a small reception at a local brewery, and so much more.
- Have a backup plan – mountain weather can be unpredictable! A Plan B ensures there’s no stress if you have to shift gears.
- Bring layers – Hope Valley sits above 7,000 feet, so it can be pretty chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings.
- Download offline maps – you don’t want to be stuck without service and not know where to go!
- Pack snacks and water – all food and amenities are a little ways away once you’re in the valley.
- Hire a photographer who knows Hope Valley – my job goes beyond taking photos – I’ll also help with the timeline, navigate permits, and have a Plan B ready, so all you have to think about is getting married.

Hope Valley Elopement Inspiration
Kristi and Jordan eloped in Hope Valley, and I feel beyond blessed to have met them and to be able to go through the whole planning process with them! From the get go, these two trusted me and my experience to help them plan their dream elopement.
When Kristi and I first talked, we discussed possible locations. I wanted to make sure it was meaningful to them, so we talked about places that they’ve visited and loved. Kristi told me about Lake Tahoe, and how it was their safe place – how they’ve spent time there and how much they loved it. It was obvious from the get go that it had to be Lake Tahoe!
They put full trust in me to scout locations for them and find them the perfect spot, and when they got there on the day of, they were blown away. It was exactly everything that they wanted!
When I met up with them, they were enjoying some drinks and snacks by the lake, and enjoying their view with Kristi’s sister, who would be their officiant. We were then joined by two of their closest friends, and you could tell that the vibe was very chill and that they were ready! They got ready on opposite sides of the car and did a little first look in the trees, just the two of them. We then walked over to the lake together for them to exchange their vows. The ceremony was quick and sweet, and we then popped some champagne to celebrate and wandered around, exploring while taking photos. They ended the night with pizza and beer at a local joint, AleWorx. By the way, if you haven’t been, you should check it out! Their pizza was delicious, and they had so much beer on tap where you can self-serve and can get as much and as little as you’d like. How cool, right?
